Brad Layton, Band Director

brad Brad Layton is in his sixteenth year as a band director and third year as band director in the Chapin Schools.  He directs the award winning “Pride of the Midlands” Marching Band, and conducts the Chapin High School Symphonic Band and Percussion Ensemble.  He also teaches the beginning and intermediate woodwind classes at Chapin Middle School.  Under his direction the bands at Chapin High School have earned Superior Ratings at Marching and Concert events.  In the fall of 2006, the marching band was named the SC Band Director’s Association Lower State AAA Champion and AAA State Runner-up.  In the spring of 2007, the Symphonic Band traveled to Southern California and earned a Gold Rating and 1st Place at the Anaheim Heritage Music Festival.

Prior to coming to Chapin, Mr. Layton was band director at Spring Valley High School, Blythewood Middle School, and Lugoff-Elgin Middle School.  Each school, including Chapin, has earned the SC Band Director’s Association’s Outstanding Performance Award under Mr. Layton’s leadership.  In February 2000, the Blythewood Middle School Band was a featured ensemble at the SC Music Educator’s Conference.  In 2001, Mr. Layton was named the South Carolina representative for School Band and Orchestra Magazine’s “50 Director’s Who Make A Difference.”  Four times he has been recognized in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.  Mr. Layton has conducted clinics and adjudicates marching and concert events throughout the Southeast.

As a performer, Mr. Layton is a euphonium player with the Palmetto Concert Band and a trombone player in the Columbia Jazz Orchestra.  He has been a featured soloist with the Camden Community Concert Band and the Ridge View High School Symphonic Band.  In the fall of 2004, he performed on euphonium with the South Carolina Philharmonic Orchestra’s production of The Planets.

Mr. Layton’s professional affiliations include Phi Beta Mu, National Band Association, Music Educator’s National Conference, SC Band Directors Association, and Phi Mu Alpha.  He and his wife Jennifer have four children and reside in Ballentine, SC.
